ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

refinishing bannisters

I have stripped off the wax and varnish from our 1930's solid oak bannisters, using wood soap by Pledge. The oak is in good condition, apart from being dried out from the soap. Should I treat the wood before staining/varnishing to stop it splitting? If so, is there oil, etc. I could use which is low on solvents and doesn't stink the house out?
