wax buildup on french polished furniture piece

My grandfather build reproductions of antique furniture from about 1950-1966 for Birlandt's furniture co. in Charleston, SC. His family was from Germany and this trade was passed down to him. My mother always said that the finish was french polished. My mother polished them with Pledge for years; and, they have a wax buildup. Is there anything that I can do to remove this without damaging the finish? My mother said that these are very valuable pieces of furniture and never to have them refinished. Also, once the wax buildup is gone, what should they be polished with on a weekly basis?

Thank you!
