ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

Deep Black Finishes

I restore antique phonographs which have black metal parts that were originally finished with a material called asphaltum. After 100 years, this surface usually needs repair and I can not find any modern paint that is as black as the original finish. Products like rustolem and krylon enamel have a dirty, grayish black appearance compared to the original finish. Do you have any suggestions for something I might use to touch upm an old finish like that? Thanks. Dave
