T. J. The idea is to remove the finish slowly to avoid damaging the leather and the gold tooling. That is why I recommended the alcohol. You would not use the steel wool until the finish was rebuilt then rub the finish to smooth it. It may be that alcohol will not remove the old finish, I did not realize that it was in such bad condition. Sometimes you need a stronger solvent in which case adding lacquer thinner, up to 50% will speed up the process. If you use lacquer thinner you have to be more carefull not to damage the leather. If you can clean it this way you will not need to stain the table as the color in the wood will not be removed.
