ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

table top splitting

I have a 1920's solid oak English Dinner Table, the top is made of solid oak approx 1 in thick. The table has developed splits, running where planks were joined together. I would like to know how to deal with this problem. Right now I have sprayed the splits with a mixture of oil and water, covered it with a wooden board, and put weights on top. Help please
