In Response To: paste wax (Helen Watkinson)

Pate wax the entire piece. On the dull areas you might want to try putting it on with 0000 steel wool so that the paste wax acts as a lubricant that will allow you to repolish the existing finish. The finish on your piece will most likely be varnish or lacquer. A quick test with a cotton swab dipped in lacquer thinner will tell you which it is, lightly rub a small spot with the wet swab, if it softens imedeiately it is lacquer, if it has little or no effect it is varnish. do this in a concealed area.
