Bear in mind that if these pieces are genuinely 17th / 18th century, they should be considered potentially very valuable. You might want to have a trained professional undertake the work required; from working over 25 years in furniture restoration and conservation in both Britain and the US, I can't tell you how many pieces I have seem pass through the workshops after having been damaged and devalued through poorly executed repair work - even with the best of intentions. The cost of correcting the mistakes can also be considerable. While not meaning to discourage your enthusiasm (!), a professional (and not just a furniture refinisher!) might be your best option.
