I would attempt to stabilize the coffer bottom wit one of thewood consolidants. It would probably be best to leave the finish and stains as is. The lacquer can be glossed by using rubbing compounds, but again it is probably bes to leave it as is. Check flea markets and antique shops for old keys, or if you can find a good locksmith they may be able to make a key for you.
