This sounds like a very large job. If it is at all posssible I would dry to dismantle the rails and spindles. They would be much easier to handle. Don't however try to remove th newel posts. Most rails are nailed or bolted in place. Look under the rails where they meet the posts if there is a bolt there you should be able to remove them fairly easily, the spindles will probably be nailed in place. If you can't remove the parts it will have to be stripped in place. I would use one of the heavy paste architectural strippers that you wrap with plastic. Cover everything wlse with heavy plastic then a cloth drop cloth then layers of newspaper or newsprint. I'm not sure this is a job you want to take on yourself. It will take lots of time and work. You may want to look for a professional who will take it on.
