ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

What type of finish for kitchen table top?

I want to refinish the top of an oak kitchen table (no antique value). The existing finish is some kind of pigmented finish that has worn through in several large areas and is scratched and worn everywhere after about 10 years of everyday use. Any suggestions as to the best type of finish to use, assuming I will be removing the existing finish? I want it to be water resistant, to show off the oak grain, and not be something that will flake off or peel. And fo course it must be safe to interact with food (I have three children). I am an amateur, and have no spray equipment. Thanks for any suggestions.
