Old Trunk

Hi, I recently recieved an old trunk, which belonged to my grandfather. The ouside is punched tin, leather, and wood. It has been sitting in a basement for about 50years and has accumulated a bit of dirt and mildew. Is there a safe way to clean the leather? Also the leather overlaps the tin, is there a safe way to clean the tin without harming the leather?

I have never restored anything before, but this item holds a great deal of sentimental value and would like to see it fixed up again. Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Alexis
