You may have to plug the holes for the screws and rebore them for the proper siz. The longer screw were probably put in becase the original ones stripped out. You can either plug the outer holes or use a little filler and grain paint it to match. The cedar oder should come back with sanding, are you sure that no finish has been put on the inside. Lane has had a couple of recalls for unsafe locks and lid supports, check their web site.
