Mistreated cedar chest

Recently purchased an old Lane cedar chest. It is one with legs and a drawer under the chest itself. Whoever owned it before wasn't very kind to it, but basicly there are two problems I wish to address: 1. The most serious is where the hinges attach to the lid the screws were replaced with ones which were too long which resulted in them coming through the top of the lid. The culprit realized this too late, it appears, and his (her) solution was simply to back out the screws slightly which resulted in holes in the top and loose hinges. 2. The interior no longer has the desired cedar odor which I do love. Lightly sanding the interior hasn't resulted in a satisfactory return of the aroma and I plan on using some cedar oil, but I can't find any locally and I don't want to use too much which would stain the intended contents. Suggestions please?
