Depending on the original finish alcohol or lacquer thinner may reamalgamate the finish. Test the finish with cotton swabs to see what will affect it. Then it takes some time and practice to rewet the finish and flow it without removing it. A rubber made of lint free cloth folded into a pad that is 6-8 layers thick and about the size of the palm of your hand works well to appply it with. Rub in small overlapping circles and refold pad to a fresh surface when it gets dirty. Once you have done the entire piece let it dry for 3-5 days then repolish with steel wool. If you need to you can then recoat with lacquer to build up enough finish thickness to give the piece good protection.
