Removing Veneer

I have a hope chest I'm refinishing. As the body of the chest is veneered and is buckled on all three sides in many places, I want to remove all the veneer (then paint the cedar sides and just refinish the top, where the veneer is in good shape). Thinking it was glued on w/ hide glue, I tried to use damp towel w/ iron to heat glue and get veneer off, w/ no success. Now I'm thinking venner has yellow glue underneath (or maybe contact cement). Any ideas on how I can get veneer off (ie some other solvent, sanding off venner?). Thanks.
