Dear Matt - I cannot comment on the antiquity of your piece, I just dont know. However here in the UK we would clean an old piece of furniture as you describe with a mixture of 33% Meths, 33%white spirit or turps & 33% linseed oil. A mild abrasive comprising pumice powder or rottenstone can be useful on heavily tarnished items. Wipe on with a cotton rag and rub, turning the cloth over regularly to expose a clean surface. I guarantee it will remove your old wax and the years of grime it has collected. If the underlying finish is OK we would then re wax. Good luck.
