ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

leather top table

I just purchased an antique leather top table. Unfortunately someone painted the entire table white. I have begun refinishing it, and following the advise of some local leather craftsmen, I used paint remover to take the paint off the leather. It worked well except that it turned the leather a bright red and the color is uneven. Will I be able to redye the leather to make it closer to the original color, and if so how do I go about doing it, or do I need to replace the leather? The top was originally tooled in a star-like design and then gold leaf was applied in the tool marks. If I need to replace the leather where can I find some one who can replicate the design on the surface? Thanks for your help.
