Thanks so much for the info Jim, I sure hated to pass up four matching chairs that I really like and actually I will buy them even the way they look now and "Dare" anyone to sit in them. I will have them repaired one at a time.

Bye the way, I like the old look they now have and prefer it. At their age is it OK to leave them that way and just clean them up? Is that acceptable without someone saying they look like "junk" (to me they certainly don't look like junk, they look Just Right). They are oak, what's good to clean just the grim off them without destroying the patina?
