I don't know what a caul might be, but when you have removed the veneer from the carcass, it is likely to be quite wet and wants to curl and do all sorts of unwanted things. Keep it flat by laying it between two sheets of MDF or so until dry. If you are really careful, you can remove it with very little water and just a little bit of heat (using a hot air gun) and a lot of patience, gently pushing a long knife under the veneer. If the veneer is a bit cooperative, that way you can sometimes even keep the original finish.
