Thanks Jim. No specialized marquetry associations found I 'm afraid. I 've also contacted museums but they are generally slow at replying. That is why I was hoping somebody here might be able to point me to sources of traditional marquetry designs (Ken, here's your chance!).

However, I have obtained some useful suggestions. One was to examine the area under UV light, or a yellow or green spectrum, which might make some traces of the original woods stand out in one or another way. Another was to fiddle around with the digital image in Photoshop, adjusting color levels, contrast etc. until hidden patterns were revealed. Somebody wrote he had obtained promising results in that way (but he did not include the modified image ? ).
