ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

100 Year Old Table

Purchased Dinning table and started stripping all varnish. Wood appears to be oak. Legs have consistent grain. Top of table is varied grain. Initial question..........Need to stabalize table by re-enforcing supports for leafs, side boards, etc. If I use modern day wood, screws, or possibly metal braces, will this diminish the value. Or should I try to use similar materials to stabalize?
