ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

We found a fireplace mantel that appears to be antique..it had square nails in it. How can I find out how old it is? Or what era? It looks Victorian. I've stripped about 8 layers of paint off of it and it appears to be mahogany. Are there any secrets to a successful look? I would like to remove all the paint and re-finish the wood. There is a lot of detail work! Thanks.
