If you use Deft which is brushing lacquer and keep all your brush strokes in one direction with the grain using a soft brush keeping a wet edge you should be able to get a good finish on your table. If it gets rough sand between coats with 360 grit wet dry paper. The final coat should be wet sanded with 360 wet dry and then rubbed out with 0000 steel wool. You should put on at least three coats. If you then put a coat of paste wax on you should get good service from your finish. Don't let water stand on the surface and use a trivet und hot dishes. Varnish will get too strong a grip on the lacquer and is apt to lift it.
