mixing finishes on the same project

What a fabulous web site!!! I am reviving the finish on a massive style dining room table from the 20s. The original finish was lacquer. I spent the day cleaning it with a formula of boiled linseed oil, turpentine and lacquer thinner. It is looking pretty dang good from the alligatored and scratched surface I started with. Since it is a dining room table, I would like to put a varnish on over the lacquer to add protection. I am afraid that the remaining lacquer, or even adding another coat of lacquer will not be enough to stand up to spilled water and the abuse that a dinng room table has to endure. Any suggestions? Thanks
