Since the cracks are hairline I would not do anything to them. Try removing the old finish with a 50/50 mix of lacquer thinner and denatured alcohol. Use 00 steel wool or cottan rag to apply and wipe off with paper towel. By doing this you should not have to sand or only sand very lightly. Use shellac or lacquer for the new finish. You may also want to lightly sand the inside of the chest to release more smell to keep the bugs out.
