cedar chest

My wife has a cedar chest her great-grandfather made around 1928. It needs to be refinished and there are some hair-line cracks in the planks. One runs the entire length of a front panel. Another is only a few inches. Should these be repaired and how? How can I tell what kind of finish to use. I don't want to mess it up!
