pressed back chair seat

I'm in love with a pressed-back chair but it has no seat. The frame for the seat seems to be in OK shape, but the layers of veneer that formed the actual seat have peeled and cracked away. My dilemma in replacing the seat is that there are seven rungs running from the seat up to the pressed-back panel on the chair's back, and they have me stumped as to a quick fix. Should I find a replacement seat and drill holes in it to accomodate the rungs? Are such seats available or should I have one custom-made? If I make my own it won't have the impression (for the behind) that most seats do, and I'm afraid it won't be comfortable.

Thanks for any tips!
