Before you try anything drastic try soap and water. Use a mild soap and do not soak the piece just dampen it rinse and wipe dry. If that does not clean it try mineral spirits on a rag wipe on any wipe or blot off with rag orpaper towel. If that does not clean it you will have to go to something hotter. I use a 50/50 mix of denatured alcohol and lacquer thinner. Apply this with lint free pad and work in small overlapping circles. Chane the pad to a clean face as it gets dirty. With practice you can remove as little or as much of a finish as you want to without ever getting down to the wood.
