ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

red pine press

Have acquired a beautiful red pine press/cupboard. Am totally new to restoration so am unsure of the finish. Either wax or a matt varnish (not sure they had matt varnish 80 years ago!). Anyway I don't want to remove the finish as the grain is beautifully visible - it is just a bit grubby. Someone said something about a white spirit and linseed oil mix as a cleanser. Is this right and if so in what proportions? Any hints or advice would be greatly appreciated. I would prefer any intervention to be as simple as possible as the patina is gorgeous. Just a bit of clean up needed.
