Mengel Furniture

I have recently acquired my grandparents Mengel Mahogany Bedroom set. It consists of a double bed, two night stands (one round the other square), vanity w/mirror & bench, dresser w/mirror and a chest of drawers. All pieces are dated from various months of 1948. I haven't been able to discover much about this furniture other than a few tidbits about the company that produced it. I am concerned about refinishing it and the effect, if any, it may have on the value. The two end table need to be stripped regardless since my grandfather "antiqued" them with gold paint when, as my mother tells me, that was the rage in the early '70. Any advice on how I should proceed or is this a job for a professional.

Thanks for any advice!
