Haywood Wakefield Darkened Flaking Varnish

I have acquired a complete Haywood Wakefield dining room group. It is in the wonderful champagne finish but the varnish has discolored with age and is easy to flake off in some places with just my finger nail. The discoloration is hiding the beautiful of the wood as it was originally. I would just like to remove the varnish leaving the original finish. What might I use to do this? In addition, the table and chairs have set in water and the lower inch on the legs has turned white with a darker edge to the top. Again, without severe treatment can they be brought back to match the rest?
