The problem i have with polyurethane is that the semi gloss looks dull and lifeless and the gloss is too shiny and prone to specks and hair in the finish.I have used circa 1850 paste varnish, applied with a soft lint free cloth, with great success. I once poly'd an oak table top and hated the choked look to it--too much like a shiny plastic skin.
