ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

Old Roll Top Desk

Dear Sir:

I recently bought an old oak roll top desk - minus the desk top and the center drawer! The roll top was sitting on a particle board, which was resting to 2 sets of drawers.

Any idea on how to make a rudimentary desk top. I am very new at this and was thinking of maybe buying an oak plywood and get it cut down to size (the roll top measures 58 inches x 30 inches, sanded and apply many coats of shellac (I have been refinishing the drawers in shellac). However the edges would look pretty crude.

Any other suggestions? Are there any companies out there that will sell a custom sized oak top? Again, I am new at this and thanks for the patience.
