For light rust you can disolve most with a hydrated mix of water and oxalic acid crystals, as well lemon juice may help to wipe away the light rust with a paper towel or cotton cloth. I would follow that with a coat of WD 40, then a light buff to remove the excess. Heavy rust will require Navel Jelly, but could darken or damage any painted finish.
