Thanks for your candidness ... boy, it is depressing. I had the table home less than a day! I will take some photos and post them or send them to you at your e-mail address listed above (is that okay?) Incidently, when the table looked horrifying, I did take Mineral Spirits and used only a soft cloth and careful strokes with the grain of the wood. The table did look a little better afterward (but still terrible). I will try the advise you gave above and see how that works. If it doesn't work, I will resign myself to a restoration. I really appreciate your advise.
