Any idea of the wood type?...and the age?..I suggest a good paste waxing twice a year if the finish is in good shape....it will protect better than Lemon oil. Use a stiff brush (a bristle paint brush with the bristles cut down is good for this..) to vigorously rub the wax into the carved and detailed areas, and make sure to buff it all off briskly. Use a colored wax for dark woods, (some lighter woods too, depending on the desired look)...it will help accentuate the detail and wood, and cover small scratches, nicks, etc., better.
