Brass Cleaning/Restoration

I have what appears to be a brass lamp that someone has painted over with Silver Spray Paint.
It's a tall standing lamp (Like the Halogen Bowl lamps they have out today).
It appears to be solid brass. Upon disassembly, I found that the inside was a bright shiny brass color.
Is there any way of telling if it is true brass? If so, what's the best way to get the paint off of it without hurting the finish below.

Test it with a magnet if it is brass or brass plate over pot metal the magnet will not stick. If it is brass or brass plate you can strip the paint w/ commercial stripper and then polish it. You should dismantle lamp before stripping so as not to damage wiring. While you have it apart you should replace any old wire and check sockets to be sure they ar in good condition.

craters ???

cherry wood shelves, sprayed with conversion varnish showing areas where the finish simply will not adhere to. This leaves crater-like areas, where the varnish simply pushes away no matter how many times it is sanded and resprayed. Is this problem embedded in the wood ? Any suggestions will be greatly accepted. Thanks!

The Dreaded silicone bug has got you. The wood has been contiaminated. No amount of sanding will remove it. You need to put fish eye eliminator in your finish.

There is a lot of glass "benders" around. The best way is call around in your area until you find a glass binding company that works on antiques. There is also a bending always advertising in the New Town Bee. ANd here is a place on the internet. http://www.curved.com/antique.html

Check your area Yellow Pages for stone yards, marble, or monuments and you should find someone to polish your table top. You would be hard pressed to find the grades of grits to polish the slab yourself.

I think what you have is very valuable. To add or modify it would be to destroy or lose 90% of its value. Contact a textile conservator near you by calling the number below.

PS Keep the pennant away from light, especially sunlight. After you have it restored place it in a box with a glass lid that filters out harmful (bleaching)light.

antique oak washstand with black rings and large dark circle from water damage

Can you tell me how to remove black circles caused from an airfreshner can sitting on an antique oak washstand. There is also a dark circle caused from a piece of pottery sitting in water. My four year old granddaughter watered my "dry" arrangement of flowers and the pottery leaked. We have no idea how long it sat there. Thanks for your help, Jean B.

This answer is from the Antique Furniture discussion board. Re: how to take out old black water stain? From: Jeff Jewitt Date: 2/1/99 Time: 10:58:50 PM Remote Name: 209.57.71.30

Comments Oxalic acid crystals, dissolved in water is the first thing to try. Wipe the stain then the whole piece. Make sure the finish is removed and lightly sand it so that the bleach penetrates. Wait overnight to see if the stain is gone - another application may be required
